Visit the Ohio Statehouse

Columbus is fortunate enough to be the Ohio state capital, and with that privilege comes the beautiful Ohio Statehouse and its storied history. The structure was completed in 1861 with the help of prison labor from the Ohio Penitentiary (which ironically was previously located where the Arena District now sits). Visiting the statehouse at Capitol Square offers a variety of great museums, statues, and history lessons to visit. There is also an excellent cafe on site that is worth the visit.

Not Just for Legislation

The visitor’s Museum Education Center has many exhibits that are meant to inform and challenge participants about their knowledge in our state government. One of my personal favorite parts of visiting is viewing the portraits of all of the state Governors dating back to 1788. It is an amazing stroll through our state history and the different leaders that have had a huge impact throughout many tumultuous times in our countries history. If it’s warm enough to enjoy, the surrounding parks and monuments offer many relaxing places to sit and enjoy downtown.
